De almabtrieb

An annually returning farmer's tradition in Gerlos and Krimml is the almabtrieb which is celebrated festively. The cows are standing on the alpine pasture in the summer and the winter-stable period starts around the second half of September. The cows are beautifully decorated with bells, flowers and ribbons and are tbrouhgt back to the homestead  by the 'Moarkuh'.

This feast is flanked by parades with floats where old crafts are depicted, with thighsmen, brass band, and men on horses who exhibit their skills with the wip. Everywhere there are stalls along the way, food and drinks are plentiful, live-musicand dancing on the street.  The Austrian enthusiast must experience this once!
